This year, at the Catalyst West conference, we created an experience about the joy of bringing things out of the darkness and into the light. We built a three sided light box that was 8′x8′x8′ and invited people in. Here are some pictures and building instructions.
We also recently built the same cube as part of an interactive art experience for an Orlando community event. On the front side, we invited a professional artist names Chris Jackson to create something. Then we left the other two side available for anyone else to participate.
The cube is pretty simple to build and can be done for around $100. Here’s how :
The frame is made out of 2″x2″ boards 8′ long.
4 of those, joined at the corners, make one 8′x8′ canvas frame.
You’ll need to reinforce the corners with another 6-8″ piece of wood at the joints so the frame doesn’t twist when pressure is put on it by stretching the fabric.
Make three of these.
The fabric is 108″ unbleached muslin. You can buy this at Jo-Ann Fabrics or most other fabric stores. Get at least 30 feet, (but getting a few extra feet is always a good idea)
Lay a 10′ long piece of muslin on the floor, and put one of the frames on top of it.
Wrap the muslin up around the frame, and use a staple gun to attach it to two of the sides.
You’ll want to stretch it out as you do this, but don’t do it so tightly that the muslin rips. I usually put a staple every 8-10 inches.
Once you have those two sides on, work with one other person to stretch and staple the fabric to the other two sides.
After you have stretched fabric over the three panels, stand them up, and screw them together.
You’ll also want to have one extra 2×2 that you can screw at the top of the open side. This will hold the two side panels up.
